What We Do
One Change's This Blue Dot water conservation initiative stimulates action on water waste by making it possible for everyone to detect and repair common toilet leaks. This simple action cuts water waste, saves energy, reduces municipal water bills and helps to preserve a precious natural resource. Using a tiny vegetable dye tablet (This Blue Dot) is an easy first step that provides a gateway to broad discussion and understanding of water waste and the importance of conservation. Because using This Blue Dot is easy, One Change provides a positive experience of action that empowers people to believe that simple actions matter. This positive experience leads to a change in self-perception that increases the likelihood that the participant will continue to make other smart choices that protect the environment. One Change engages and connects with volunteers, community groups and leaders and then mobilizes them in their own communities to deliver the free This Blue Dot kits and other water conservation messages to their friends and neighbours door-to-door, at participating RBC locations, and at local events. Information on how to repair a leaky toilet, as well as partner and sponsor water conservation information is bundled with the kit. At community events, volunteers and staff use interactive, hands-on displays to show people how easy it is to detect and repair common toilet leaks. One Change tips awareness into action by making simple first steps accessible to all people and by strengthening and connecting diverse communities – particularly those that have been ignored or excluded by mainstream environmentalism, politics and economics. Indeed, we need to empower citizens from every area of society and from across the political spectrum to tackle the twin challenges of climate change and social disengagement. By bringing people of all backgrounds together to promote non-partisan, pragmatic actions that anyone can take, we build bridges between community organizations and strengthen community networks. At the heart of the One Change approach is community based social marketing. Each One Change campaign identifies and then attempts to address barriers to change, and is rigorously pilot tested. We welcome the input and involvement of, well, everybody.
